After the Fat: Rise in Post Weight-Loss SurgeryNew Data from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
NEW YORK, NY (March 11, 2004) — Plastic surgeons say that post bariatric body contouring is an area of cosmetic surgery that is set to virtually explode over the next decade. With nearly one-third of U.S. adults obese and another third overweight, many are turning to bariatric surgery to lose pounds. But after the fat is gone, these patients are faced with the problem of loose, hanging skin – and lots of it. Today, more people than ever are turning to plastic surgery for help.
According to 2003 Cosmetic Surgery Statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), there were significant increases in the numbers of post weight-loss procedures performed last year. For example, lower body lifts – probably the most extensive of all body contouring procedures – increased by 127 percent to nearly 11,000 procedures. Upper arm lifts increased 68 percent, buttock lifts increased 70 percent, and tummy tucks increased 42 percent.
