Will breast implants interfere with a mammogram?

Breast implants, particularly when placed above the muscle can make it more difficult to get a good mammogram. When the implants are placed below the muscle, the breast tissue is held up on top of the muscle and is not blocked by the implant. It is important to get your examination done at a center that does a lot of mammograms and tell them that you have breast implants. They will do special additional views to see the breast tissue that can be obscured by the implant. With good technique, the breast tissue will be seen satisfactorily. A large study has compared the incidence and stage of detection of breast cancer in women with and without implants and there was no difference between the groups.
