Bruising Feeling After Breast Implants

Question for Denver Plastic Surgeon Dr. John Squires about Breast Augmentation:

I got breast implants in 2006. It’s been 3 years and everything has been fine, up until this past week when a small area of my right breast has been slighty hurting. It feels as though it was bruised, yet there are no visual indications of a physical, darkened bruise. What could this be? Thanks.

I am a bartender. Could it be possibly because I lifted something too heavy/too quickly and torn something?

Answer from Dr. John Squires:

At three years after surgery, I think the most likely thing you are experiencing is a pull of the muscle or perhaps a small tear in the scar tissue capsule around the implant.

The most prudent course would be to have your plastic surgeon examine you to make sure nothing else is going on.

Saline Implants Sticking out Underneath Breast

Question for Denver Plastic Surgeon Dr. John Squires about Breast Augmentation:

I am a week out of breast augmentation. I received 250cc saline smooth implants under the muscle. And ever since day two, I’ve noticed the left breast implant showing on the side and sticking out the bottom. Making it hang lower, yet the nipples are symmetrical.

Is this a problem or is this normal while it heals? My right breast has looked normal (minus minor swelling) from the beginning. Which is why I am more alarmed with the left breast. I feel that depending on the angle and light hitting my breasts, you can see the implant sticking out more on the left side & underneath. It feels squishy too.

Answer from Dr. John Squires:

It appears that the implant is too low and is causing a double bubble deformity. Take off the upper pole band and begin wearing a supportive bra 24/7. You may be able to get the implant to heal in the proper position. If not, you may need surgery to close the lower portion of the implant pocket.

Are Today’s Breast Implants Safer Than They Were 15 Years Ago?

Question for Denver Plastic Surgeon Dr. John Squires about Breast Augmentation:

I have 15 year old silicone breast implants. Are today’s silicone implants any safer? I have been ill on and off ever since having the implants, but now I am sick most of the time.

I have had blood results back which say that I have high levels of silicone and high levels of nickel in my blood. I am not ready to live life without boobs, but I don’t want to be ill for the rest of my life. So as you can see, I need to weigh the odds. This brings me back to the question above, are the silicone breast implants today any safer than they were 15 years ago?

Answer from Dr. John Squires:

Silicone implants of any age have not been found to cause any disease. The illnesses that we were concerned were linked to the implants have been found to be just as common in women without implants as with silicone implants. The FDA has published all the pertinent data.

That being said, today’s implants are much less likely to leak than the old implants. The old implants had a very thin outer shell that could rupture easily. They were filled with liquid silicone and caused a big mess if they leaked.

The current implant design is approximately 8 years old. The shell is much tougher and the silicone inside is a cohesive gel, meaning that if the implant should rupture the gel sticks together and does not run everywhere.

In an MRI study, the leak rate of these new silicone implants at seven years was less than 1%.

What Are the Complications from Leaking Breast Implants?

Question for Denver Plastic Surgeon Dr. John Squires about Breast Implants:

I had my first saline implant in 2000. Last July 2007, I had my first mammogram and the technician repeated the procedure 6 times despite informing her of my implants.

When I got the result, it was noted that there is a leak from the implant. That was almost 2 yrs ago, and I’ve had this anxiety of complications from the leak. Please let me know what is best to do. Thank you

Answer from Dr. John Squires:

Ruptured saline implants will not cause any complications other than the breasts becoming smaller. It is a relatively easy procedure to replace the implants.  Depending on the age of your implants you may be eligible for warranty coverage. Check with your surgeon.

Breast Augmentation Through Periareolar

Question for Denver Plastic Surgeon Dr. John Squires about Breast Augmentation:

Hello I’ve been thinking of getting silicone implants and have visited 3 cosmetic surgeons so far and all of them had different opnions, so I am kind of confused. I want to have it done though periareolar because the doctor will be able to make my areola a little bit smaller that way… I dont like my areola sizes…I think something a little bit smaller would look better on me since I am 118 pounds and a size 2. MY GOAL is FULL C/SMALL D CUPSIZE, SMALLER AREOLAS AND NATURAL LOOKING. Thank you so much!

Answer from Dr. John Squires:

In many cases it is possible to get a breast lift, reduce the size of the areolae and place breast  implants using only an incision around the areola.

Was Quoted Same Price for Saline and Cohesive Gels, Why Is That?

Question for Denver Plastic Surgeon Dr. John Squires about Breast Implants:

I have set up a consult for early July, I called 2 different places and was told it was $7,000 for Saline or Cohesive gels, I said “so same price for either?” they both said yes, I was under the impression Cohesive gel was much more then Saline, I’m barely an A, very thin (5’5 100lbs) had 2 kids and breastfed both, I’m thinking gels would be better, id love to be a small D, any thoughts on why they would quote same price?

Answer from Dr. John Squires:

Saline imlpants are less expensive than silicone. You may not have had an accurate quote.

help … low cut bras for after surgery

Question for Denver Plastic Surgeon Dr. John Squires about Breast Implants- Post Surgery:

Hello …. I am having my surgery for breast implants in 3 weeks.  I understand that for 6 weeks you have to wear a sports bra.  If have a night out planned within that 6 weeks can I wear a low cut, front closure, no-wire sports type bra?  So that way I can wear something cute to show my cleavage a bit?  Or do I need to focus on wearing high collared shirts for the first 6 weeks? Thanks

Answer from Dr. John Squires:

Patients frequently ask me what kind of bra they will have to wear after breast augmentation. I prefer a cupped bra with good support and front closure. I tell my patients to wear this night and day for 2 weeks to help the breast implants settle in the proper position. They can remove the bra to shower and launder the bra. If there is no skin numbness, I allow an underwire bra, or whatever bra the patient desires, at 2 weeks. I do not generally like sports bras the first month after surgery as they can flatten the implants.
