Community Service Post Katrina: American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Members Answer the Call
NEW YORK, NY (October 11, 2005) – In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, members of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) felt the same inspiration to serve their communities and their country as the rest of America. Many ASAPS-member plastic surgeons had volunteered their skills before the tragedy, while others felt reawakened to the call of community service post Katrina. Below are some of the joint and individual contributions that were made by the Society’s members and other plastic surgeons.
- On October 6, 2005 the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF) Hurricane Katrina Effort sent a check for $39,450.00 to the Convoy of Hope, the ‘on the ground’ charity that continues providing relief in the Gulf Coast Region. “We are pleased with the work that this charity has done to help countless individuals with food, clothing and assistance in recovering from this disaster,” says Mark Jewell, MD, ASAPS President.
- Following the hurricane, Burr von Maur, MD, of Mission Viejo, CA, volunteered his medical services in Bay St. Louis, Miss. Not only did he use his medical skills suturing lacerations and draining abscesses, but he helped cook meals, aided in demolition, and talked to the evacuees.
- One of the many offers to help displaced surgical residents was from T. Gerald O’Daniel, MD in Louisville, KY, who offered to house a resident and his/her family in Louisville. The evacuated resident would be able to transfer his/her residency to the University of Louisville. The offer has not yet been accepted, but is still available.
- Laurie Casas, MD, of Chicago, IL, is part of the Medical group of Evanston Northwestern Healthcare which just donated $100,000 dollars to the Red Cross earmarked for the Katrina relief fund.
“Our profession of cosmetic plastic surgery affords wonderful opportunities to help people feel good about themselves, but there are so many other ways in which ASAPS members also contribute to the welfare of their communities and, in many cases, the world,” says Dr. Jewell. “The Society hopes that this recognition will encourage others among us to participate as well.”
